In March, Apple debuted the second generation of the infamous AirPods, featuring several updates and enhancements while keeping the same name.

Read below to discover what’s improved about the new AirPods and what’s stayed the same!

Price of New AirPods vs. Old AirPods

In terms of pricing, the new AirPods still come at the same $159 price as the first-generation, but now customers have the option to buy the AirPods with a wireless charging case for $199. Customers can also purchase the wireless case separately for $79, so if you already own the first-generation AirPods you can use that case to charge your AirPods on any Qi-compatible charging mat. Note, the wireless charging case still includes a lightning port so you can still charge the case via cable depending on your preference.

New Design vs. Old Design

The design of the AirPods look exactly the same as the first-generation, aside from the LED light found on the front of the case. The light is simply to tell you the charging status when the case is placed on the wireless charging mat. On the standard charging case the LED is placed on the inside of the case between the earbud pockets.

Aside from that, the case and earbuds both have the same width and height and are only available in white.

New vs. Old Processor

The new AirPods run on the H1 chip, which allow the AirPods to connect to calls up to 1.5 times faster than the original version, whereas the older version runs on the W1 chip. The H1 chip also claims to provide a better, more stable wireless connection, making them twice as fast when switching between devices.

Using Siri with Old vs. New AirPods

Another one of the upgraded features is the ability to activate Siri hands free when your wearing them. With the first-generation, you have to double tap the earbuds to activate the Siri command, but the new models allow you to say “Hey Siri” to activate the command.

This feature comes in handy especially when your hands are busy and want to use the Siri command to control what your listening to.

Battery Life in Old vs. New AirPods

The new AirPods offer the same battery life as the older generation, which is up to 5 hours on a single charge and 24 hours of additional battery capacity in the charging case. Although, due to the H1 chip, the new generation has 3 hours of talk time, whereas the older version only has 2. So that’s something to keep in mind if you know you’ll be taking a lot of calls with them.

In Conclusion…

So as you can see, there isn’t an earth shattering difference between the two versions, but you can also expect more upgrades in the near future. That said, it’s still worthwhile to have the first-generation if the new features don’t entice you to upgrade. Like we mentioned above, if you already have the first-generation, you can always purchase the wireless charging case. Regardless of which pair you decide to purchase, they are still one of the must have earbuds on the market and pair nicely with any of your other Apple devices.
