Interview:: Matt of Matt’s Macintosh

On August 4, 2010, in Mac, by Marilyn

I first became aware of Matt on Twtter. He doesn’t tweet much but when he does it’s always of interest. Matt has a crazy collection of classic Apple tech and makes some of the best looking videos on YouTube. He has amassed almost 600 followers on Twitter and nearly 4,500 subscribers to his YouTube channel. In addition to making nostalgic Apple videos he shares his tips and tricks on how he gets them to look so great. Most recently he shared how he made his time lapsed Magic Trackpad video using iMovie. Matt was nice enough to agree to a few questions.

You make amazingly well produced videos, have you taken classes or gone to film school?
Matt: Nope, and I think it really shows in my early videos. I literally had never filmed anything before my first YouTube upload. Its really a testament to the capabilities and ease of use of iMovie that I’ve been able to do as much as I have.

What if anything do you hope comes of all your time and hard work that you’ve put into these videos?
Matt: It is 100% a hobby for me. I have no aspirations to take it anywhere beyond that. Its something that I enjoying doing and I plan to keep it up as long as I’m still having fun with it. That being said, would it be awesome if this was my day job? Sure, but I would need about 100 times more viewers for that to happen.

You have a museum like collection of classic Apple tech, how did this all start?
Matt: It all started when I linked my PayPal account to eBay. Complete rookie mistake. Now everything I want is only a couple clicks away… and for some reason I don’t think of PayPal money as real money (at least until I check my bank account). I guess about two years ago I happened to see an ’84 Mac that was being sold as “broken”, but when I checked out the listing it turns out that the guy just didn’t have the OS disk (old Macs boot the OS off the floppy). On a complete whim I clicked the “buy it now” option and I just couldn’t stop after that.

What Apple product got you hooked?
Matt: That would have to be the G4 iMac. It was the first Mac that I bought myself shortly after High School. I was in the Air Force at the time and living in a dorm. I had this idea to get nothing but cool looking stuff to basically impress girls when I brought them over. The G4 iMac was (and still is to some people) the coolest computer you could get, so that’s how it happened. Turns out that most girls aren’t that impressed with computers, so it was kind of a failure on that front. It did, however introduce me to the wonders of OS X, and I’ve had an iMac at home ever since.

Roughly (or maybe you know exactly) how many pieces in your collection and what is your prized possession? Also, which piece was the hardest to obtain?
Matt: Well, it depends on how you want to count them. I have 16 working Apple computers, another 5 that are in various states of functionality, and a ton of peripheral gear. Its hard to pick a favorite. I love the Cube for the design and the Apple ][ for the vintage feel. Probably the hardest thing to get was a working Lisa OS. I ended up finding one loaded onto a 5MB Profile (which is a giant external hard drive) and was able to bring my Lisa 2 back to life that way.

Assuming you have a day job, does your company run on Mac?
Matt: Some offices where I work use Macs, but I am unfortunately relegated to a Windows machine. I do, however, use MobileMe to manage my calendar, so I at least have that going for me.

I love the mix of your videos. From schooling the kids on Classic Apple to helping us make better videos (Will be watching those again myself). What does the future hold for your YouTube channel? Is there anything you would like to focus on more?
Matt: I'd really like to make videos more often than I do. I upload about one video per week right now and I'm trying to bring that up to at least two. Another thing I'm looking at is telling more of the story behind the products. For example, I've got an idea I'm considering right now for a video call "Jobs vs Woz" where I hope to show how the Apple ][ was really the quintessential Wozniak machine and the Macintosh was really Jobs' vision.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share with us Matt! I think the two most shocking parts of all of this is that Matt is a "PC" by day and that movie making is not his full time job. On a side note, if the ladies aren't impressed by your computers you may be trying to date the wrong ones, that's just my opinion though ;-)

If you are currently not following Matt on Twtter or on YouTube, do yourself a favor and go do that now!

    Really interesting. I have only ‘discovered’ Matt in the last few months but feel I have learnt sooo much already.
