@ShellyFravala on Twitter sent me this message:
“@MacfusionGirl Does MailOSX allow multiple “from” email addresses via single gmail imap when gmail has other emails directed to it?”
After a few back and forths I was able to get my head around what she wanted. Her goal was to be able to interact with her multiple email addresses and have everything in one place, under her one gmail account so she didn’t have to deal with multiple folders for Sent, Drafts and Trash folders. To be honest, I didn’t think it was possible.
Situation:
You forward your work email account mac@yourdomain.com to your gmail account as you don’t have a web interface for this account. You’ve told gmail that you are the authorized owner of this account and you have registered it through them. Now you are on your desktop computer at home and want to use OS X Mail so you set up your gmail account in the Mail.app.
Problem:
When you go to reply to one of those forwarded mac@yourdomain.com emails from the mail.app you don’t have the option to chose it to be from “mac@yourdomain.com. You have that option if you use the gmail interface but you really love your mail.app and don’t want to use webmail if you don’t have to as all your contacts are in your address book on your mac.
Solution:
In your account settings for your mac@gmail.com address in your Mail.app where it shows your mac@gmail.com email address put a coma next to it and add your mac@yourdomain.com address next to it. Now when you reply to an email in Mail you will have that pop up that allows you to have it be sent from mac@yourdomain.com.
Notes:
I tested this with my own accounts. You have to have authorized that mac@yourdomain.com email address through gmail or else it doesn’t work. Simply forwarding it to gmail is not enough.
